Wellington

Wellington Insight Meditation Community Te Puaki Marama

is a community-led group that offers an open space which emphasises individual inquiry and a big hearted attitude to both formal practice and our meetings as a group.

The core of the community is the Thursday evening meeting which takes place from 7-9 pm at 31 Hobson Cres, Thorndon. Because another group has booked this venue for one Thursday evening a month, you’ll need to check the Calendar to find out where the group will be on a particular Thursday.

Following 5-10 minutes silence, sessions usually start with a recorded dharma talk followed by a discussion.

Generosity

Our community is keen that wherever possible there’s no fee to take part in Wellington Insight Meditation Community activities, and that dana, heartfelt generosity, is the basis for what we do.

For us, this reflects a shift we’d like to see towards a culture of generosity.

So that our activities can take place for dana only and with no set fee, we ask that those who want to see a lively insight meditation community support the group financially, occasionally or regularly. There is a bowl for dana at all activities, and you are encouraged to donated directly into to the WIMC Kiwibank account at 38 - 9010 - 0244181 - 00.

Wellington Insight Meditation Community Trust is registered with the Charities Commission and approved by the Inland Revenue Department as a donee organisation, which means that donations of $5 and over by individuals and businesses who pay New Zealand tax are tax deductible.

Individuals can claim a rebate of 33.3% at the end of the tax year up to the limit of their total annual income, and companies can claim to the limit of their annual net income.

Starting this year, it is possible to be generous through Payroll Giving directly from your wage. This is a simple way to make a regular donation because the tax relief is dealt with immediately.

What’s more, for every $1 that comes out of the pay you take home, through Payroll Giving WIMC receives $1.50 since 50¢ of the tax you otherwise would have paid is sent to WIMC with your donation. Another way of looking at this is how the IRD describes it:

  • The employer deducts any donation from their employee's pay, reduces their PAYE by the appropriate tax credit, and then forwards the donation to the chosen donee organisation

To set up a regular donation through Payroll Giving let your employer know you want WIMC to receive a regular donation, tell them how much it is to be, and that they should send it to:

  • Wellington Insight Meditation Community Trust
  • Kiwibank account number 38 - 9010 - 0244181 - 00
  • Charity number CC37345

If you have any questions about making a contribution, need a receipt or information on claiming a tax rebate, contact the community’s treasurer, Janice Hill by sending an email or on 04 977 7594 | 021 939 284.

About

There are a number of communities and individuals who practise insight meditation, as well as people who teach it, in Aotearoa New Zealand.

This website lets you know who they are and where they can be found, as well as where you can find sitting groups, learn to meditate, and sign up for retreats.

Contact the community or person nearest to you to find out more.

A Thought for Today

Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn't more complicated that that. It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it.
