Sitting Group

2nd and 4th Sunday of the month 5.30pm
at the Phuntsok Choeling Buddhist Centre, 11 Herschell Street, Napier, Hawkes Bay

We are an informal sitting group with no resident teacher. At our fortnightly group sits we draw on recorded teachings or readings from insight teachers here in Aotearoa and overseas.

When we met we generally have our teaching first, though occasionally this is a guided meditation. Thereafter is a discussion of what we have heard and time to answer questions about practice that group members might have. This is followed by a silent sit of anything from 20-40 minutes depending on how long the previous activities have taken. Usually we leave between 6.45 – 7pm.

Once every two months, those that would like to go to dinner at a nearby Napier restaurant afterwards.

A small donation towards the use of the Buddhist Centre at our group sits is appreciated. The centre being generously loaned to us for the evening by the local Tibetan Buddhist community.

Anyone can go on a group email to receive a monthly reminder about sits. This includes the theme and planned activities for the month.

Once or twice a year we invite a teacher to Hawkes Bay to offer a daylong retreat. Such events are advertised here.

About

There are a number of communities and individuals who practise insight meditation, as well as people who teach it, in Aotearoa New Zealand.

This website lets you know who they are and where they can be found, as well as where you can find sitting groups, learn to meditate, and sign up for retreats.

Contact the community or person nearest to you to find out more.

A Thought for Today

One of the most wonderful things in teaching retreats is to see people begin to open to that understanding of selflessness. It’s tremendously liberating to begin to see that there’s nothing to protect and nothing to solve and that rather than necessarily working out our problems, we can stop identifying with them.
